I am taken aback by the pure joy and relentless energy these young girls have while working in the Sweet Dreams Co-op. Some are just learning how to sew and others are working together on filling customer orders. There is a collective goal and optimism in this energized buzzing room. This is a place where the girls can come and focus on things other than the stressors of school and home life. A place where learning is fun and rewarding. A place where they are always welcome to join whenever they need.

Watching the young women at work in the cooperative brings me to reminiscing about the days when I was in high school, wide eyed and eager to learn a new trait. I was around the same age when I began my journey with Sweet Dreams. In all honesty, Sweet Dreams allowed me to find my career focus in the fashion field of study.

One of the major beauties through looking around the room is the apparent diversity, in language, culture and background. In this city, San Francisco, people from all around the world and neighboring states flock to this place because there is nothing like it. San Francisco is a sanctuary for many families from all over. The amount of learning from different cultures is within every corner you turn. Let alone in the room I sit in writing this, there is a plethora of exposure to culture. This is where my sanctuary is, can you describe or visualize yours?

The use of Aromatherapy dates back to thousands of years however, the term was not coined until the 20th century.

“The Chinese may have been one of the first cultures to use aromatic plants for well-being. Their practices involved burning incense to help create harmony and balance.

Later, the Egyptians invented a rudimentary distillation machine that allowed for the crude extraction of cedarwood oil. It is also thought by some that Persia and India may have also invented crude distillation machines, but very little is known” (Julia Lawless 1995)

Aromatherapy uses plants and essential oils to alter the psychological and physical well being. When used correctly, the healing provided by the plants can benefit one tremendously. For instance, lavender has been proven to reduce stress, anxiety, depression and even improve insomnia. Our Dream pillows and Eye pillows help with just that! After a hard days work or week, one just needs to unwind and placing one of these pillows over the eyes can help alleviate the stress of your day. Tell us what your favorite unwinding scent is!

On Saturday, June 1st, we had our end of the year mentoring celebration with our mentors from Rising Leaders Mentorship Program. Through these past three months they have helped us accomplish our individual goals. One of the things that they helped all of us out with was building our resumes and our LinkedIn profiles.

In my case, my mentor and I discussed my application for the Culinary program at City College and the pros and cons of that field. She encouraged me to pursue whatever I felt comfortable with but was also neutral in her opinions. With her help I feel more motivated, organized, and focused.

In case any of you mentors are reading this, we would like to thank you for all the hard work and time you put in for us. We gained a lot from this experience and we are looking forward to whatever comes next.

Today is our last day in Squaw Valley. We had buckwheat pancakes with fruits for breakfast today which was really good. We started this a different puzzle last night which was 500 pieces and we couldn’t complete it because of the time. Before, we really left the house we watched part of the Olympics. Then me (Veronica) and Mariluz did our final headstand in the house.

On our way back to San Francisco, we had our lunch stop in Auburn. We had sandwiches made by the ladies and yummy pie from Ikeda. The ride back home was pretty quick and we made it home safely.

A huge Thank you to all the mentors who planned this retreat! Thank you for giving us a great experience, hope to see you all again!

The NFTE event was May 31st, 2012. That was a while ago but just wanted to share my experience selling at the event. At first it was really scary, I just watched Samantha, my fellow co worker, sell and talk to all the people. After waiting an hour, I received the power to attack the customers. I’ve got to say that I was truly scared when I tried to hook on the my first customer. I have done sales before this event but I’m always really bad at selling at the beginning. Over time I started to enjoy myself and I’m sure my co-workers also had fun. By the way this is Mariluz.
