Hey Sweet Dreamers!Last Sunday June 9th Karen Murray Kennedy, one of Turning Heads volunteers, hosted a chocolate tasting and factory tour in order to raise awareness for Turning Heads. The event was at Charles Chocolates from 2:00pm-4:00pm. Charles Chocolates is located in the Mission District, is a widely recognized producer of fine chocolates. Also some of the mentors joined us.

First we meet there and did a little bit of delicious chocolate tasting followed by a tour of the factory. To finish off the afternoon we headed to the Turning Heads studio for brief tour. Around 10 people came to the studio and were showed the products we have. Hopefully we gain some new customers from this event.

On Saturday, June 1st, we had our end of the year mentoring celebration with our mentors from Rising Leaders Mentorship Program. Through these past three months they have helped us accomplish our individual goals. One of the things that they helped all of us out with was building our resumes and our LinkedIn profiles.

In my case, my mentor and I discussed my application for the Culinary program at City College and the pros and cons of that field. She encouraged me to pursue whatever I felt comfortable with but was also neutral in her opinions. With her help I feel more motivated, organized, and focused.

In case any of you mentors are reading this, we would like to thank you for all the hard work and time you put in for us. We gained a lot from this experience and we are looking forward to whatever comes next.

One of our Co-op members name Madina Ott just came from prom on May 18th and had a great time.  She wore a long red dress that had a crop top. It fit her body great and she says she wore it because she didn’t want anybody to have the same dress as hers.  And they didn’t. Friends and family says that she looked great and her hair was very nice also.  The prom was held at Pier 40 on a very nice boat. Madina’s date also looked great; he had a nice black suit with a red vest and black shoes. On the boat they played great music, had great food and most of all had a great group of people.

Yeah we are starting to recruit more members for our sewing boot camp. If you or someone you know is interested in our summer boot camp please let us know!! In case your wondering our summer boot camp program is looking for girls that are the ages 12-21 years old for classes where you learn about sewing, how a business runs and how to make patterns. The classes are on Wednesdays from 4:30 – 7:30pm. today we had a workshop about how to improve our marketing at sweet dreams. the workshop was presented by karen kennedy who is a entrepreneur in san francisco. she taught us about cold calling and how to promote our products to new shops. first she gave us a script on what to say in  phone calls. some people wrote their own script that they felt more comfortable saying. next we practiced by doing phone calls back to back as if doing role playing. i felt nervous at first but at the end i became more confident. now i’ll be more prepare for the next time i do my first  real cold call.

Here at Sweet dreams we are starting to come up with new projects.

1. New Lavender eye Pillows with geometric fabric. If you love brown and green you will love these new eye pillows. In addition, we also have a new stripe fabric with gold lines.

2. Some of the Sweet Dreams ladies have been working on a collective dress. Do you all remember our collective jacket? We are now trying to make a collection made with love and creativity. We hope to show this collection to fashion designers, please cross your fingers because we sure are!

Check out an applique that was embroidered on. This applique depicts Melissa on a sewing machine the first time she came into Turning Heads our Mother organization. The dress is fully decorated with images that represent various experiences each member has had in the  Co-Op.

3. Last but not least, Jane and Sandra have been going from coffee shop to coffee shop and picking up donated Burlap coffee bags. We are hoping to develop a new and exciting project to offer to you all.

Saturday, March 2nd, we got to meet our new mentors. I wasn’t sure what to expect but I was excited to get something out of this experience. We were in a circle around the large cutting table, ready to meet the young women in front of us. We did a little ice breaker and then got one on one time with our mentors.

My mentor didn’t start with more ice breakers to break the ice and instead jumped right into trying to help me. I really appreciate that because I am not the kind of person that likes to talk about themselves and I kind of suck at ice breakers. She seemed to know what questions to ask that would get me talking which was nice because I wouldn’t have come out and asked for help on my own. Even if that’s what she’s there for. She seemed like a good listener and someone who can give me feedback on my ideas. For example, we were talking about possible majors and she thought I was on the right track on choosing accounting/ business because I’m good at math.

From what I saw, it seemed like the rest of the ladies at sweet dreams also enjoyed their new mentors because there was a lot of talking and laughing. It was pretty loud but not the annoying loud there is at school or something. The first meeting was mostly about getting to know each other and to find out what they can help us on. The next meeting will be about getting a profile on LinkedIn. My mentor told me it was like a Facebook page but more professional. It has your work experience, picture, and education background. Employers can look at your profile and see if you are right for the position they’re trying to fill.
